Chinese electric car startup NextEV has launched a vehicle it claims is the fastest electric car in the world. The EP9 supercar was unveiled on 21st of November at a launch event in London and is the first model from NextEV's new brand, NIO.
This supercar reaches the top speed of 313 kph (194 mph). On October 12th, it has completed the 20.832 kilometers (12.9 mile) lap of the legendary German Nürburgring Nordschleife racetrack called “Green Hell”, where all supercar speeds are vetted, in 7 minutes and 5.12 seconds. Only the Radical SR8LM and SR8, Porsche 918 Spyder, and Lamborghini Aventador LP 750-4 Superveloce have produced quicker times.
It’s a staggering feat for a car powered only by electricity, but one that becomes a little less surprising when you learn that it brandishes a wicked 1,390HP engine, capable of accelerating from 0–200 kph (0–124 mph) in 7.1 seconds. Not only that, its battery is charged in 45 minutes and has a range of 427 kilometers (265 miles). It also features an interchangeable battery system, which allows drivers to swap out the empty cells in 8 minutes.
The car's high-speed capabilities have largely been achieved through innovative design and material choices. The cockpit and chassis is made from carbon to cut overall weight and aid aerodynamics, while its rear wing lifts to three positions to achieve twice the downforce of a regular Formula One car. The EP9’s design is thoroughly arresting: hulking wheels, a sleek physique, and a piercing face that give an aggressive stance. The sculpted haunches give it a very McLarenesque appearance. This would definitely turn some heads.
While no prices have been revealed, NextEV tells us each car costs approximately $1.2 million to build. “The NIO EP9 was born to push limits and is the first stage of automotive production for NIO,” said NextEV founder and chairman, William Li at the London launch. “It is a statement of our vision and technical and manufacturing capabilities. It is a best-in-class product that showcases what is possible with electric vehicles.”
