The intricately refurbished Poseidonion Grand Hotel brings
the French Riviera's style and architecture to the Greek islands. Its stately
façade overlooks the Argolic Gulf on Spetses, an island known for a lush
pine-clad landscape that inspired Greece’s grand naval and shipping beginnings.
Location
With its classic architecture, centrally positioned on the
island’s main Dapia Port, the Poseidonion is a structure to admire when
approaching by boat. It towers an expansive sea-bordering square where a proud
statue of Laskarina Bouboulina, the early 19th-century Greek independence
heroine and Spetsiot, stands. Very few cars are allowed on the island, so
scooters, 4x4s, bicycles and walking are the best ways to get around. The hotel
is less than a mile from the old harbour and 250 yards from the Bouboulina
Museum and the Hatzigianni Mexi Spetses Museum. The closest beaches are minutes
away too.
Style & Character
Influenced by the French Riviera’s most luxurious hotels,
the Poseidonion resembles the early 20th-century Carlton in Cannes and the
Negresco in Nice. It was completed in 1914 by the wealthy Anargyros shipping
family, and built to be the centre of society life catapulting Spetses into a
top destination for the Athenian bourgeoisie. Today, the hotel has the same
defining luxuries of the past, with its period furniture, marble staircase,
original English tiles and stately wood flooring. The addition of modern
amenities wholly respect the original architectural plan.
Service & Facilities
The Poseidon is famed for being the first Greek hotel to
offer spa services when it opened a century ago. Its wellness centre is now a
series of small whitewashed buildings that surround a 300-metre spa pool.
Treatments by the Asian Spa Resorts (of the Asian Spa Ayurvedic and City
Retreat group) include massage, facials and body treatments. Stretched across
the back garden is a sparkling palm tree-lined 17-metre lap pool. Concierge
services include island trips, gastronomic experiences and more. Hotel service
at the pool, lounges and dining areas is especially accommodating.
Rooms
The historic wing features 38 rooms with a soft blend of
whites and neutrals that define its understated elegance and include high
ceilings, flowing layered curtains, wood floors and a balance of antique and
modern furniture. The suites feature Coco-Mat luxury bed systems while small
bathrooms feature waterfall showers and O-LIVE premium Greek label toiletries.
A new annex features 17 rooms with a view of a Mediterranean garden and pool.
Two private access suites, the Royal Suite and the La Cupola Suite boast a
private balcony with panoramic views of the island.
Food & drink
The breakfast is a generous buffet spread and choices from
an à la carte menu, served on the restaurant’s terrace and indoor spaces. On
the veranda, the main sea view restaurant is the island’s gourmet dining
destination featuring an eclectic mix of Greek influenced cuisine by chef
Stamatis Marmarinos. Set in a leafy corner, the Palms on the Verandah bar
offers an extensive cocktail mix. On the adjacent veranda, the Library Brasserie
menu includes snacks and contemporary dishes. Ingredients are sourced from
Bostani, the hotel’s organic island farm. A farm visit and tour includes a meal
surrounded by the island’s lush tree-clad hills.
Access for guests with disabilities
Wheelchair ramps enable guests with disabilities to access
the new building rooms.
