Shawish
Jewelry of Switzerland has created an 150-carat ring carved from a single
diamond, setting the world record for the world’s first All-diamond Ring. It
took a full year to create the ring, which has been copyrighted and is expected
to sell for $70 million.
A ring made
entirely of a faceted diamond has always seemed like a fantasy. To create the
perfect diamond ring is the epitome of art, said Mohamed Shawish, president and
CEO of Geneva-based Shawish Jewellery.
The ring
was carved with a special laser (purchased especially for that purpose) along
with traditional diamond cutting and polishing techniques. Precisely about that
Mohamed Shawish spoke: We had to do multiple tests with the design, to get the
precision of the circle right. Diamonds are made of carbon and molecules that
can change, even the colour can be altered when attempting to cut it. We had to
buy special laser equipment, to cut directly into the diamond. The most
important aspect is preserving the integrity of the diamond and of course the
most difficult phase is precision cutting an entire stone into a ring.
$70 million
world’s first all-diamond ring is made from 150 brut carat rough diamond from
Brazil. The color of the diamond ring is certified an E and the clarity is VS1.
Sake of comparison, Elizabeth Taylor’s famed ring – present from Richard Burton
was 33.19 carats.
